How to know when you’ve had a marketing breakthrough

Ever had “entrepreneur’s déjà vu”?

You create something ingenious. You step back to look at the finished product. And you get this sense of déjà vu.

It’s almost like you’re experiencing that moment of first completion… for the second time.

Pay attention to that feeling, because you’ve just had a marketing breakthrough.

And you probably don’t realise it yet.

For example, I had that feeling when I created FAST50 ( ).

But WHY I experienced déjà vu only dawned on me today, while I was revisiting a marketing classic.

I was reading Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout.

This statistic caught my eye:

  • The per-capita consumption of advertising in America today is $880.

What that actually means is horrifying for any business:

If you spend $1,000,000 a year on advertising, you are bombarding the average customer with less than a half-cent of advertising, spread over 365 days.

And that’s a consumer already exposed to $880 worth of advertising from other companies...

Spend $1m to get a 0.00056 % share of your prospect’s mind.

As the authors point out:

“Since so little material about your product is ever going to get into the mind of the prospect, your job is really not a ‘communication’ project.

It’s a selection project. You have to select the material that has the best chance of getting through.”

Less is more.

You have to sharpen your message to cut into the prospect’s mind.

I had a “Duh!” moment with a proverbial slap to the forehead when I read that statistic, and put two and two together.

THAT’s why my students’ opt-in offers convert so well.

The FAST50 process sharpens their message until it cuts into the prospect’s mind.

Now, I already know that the system works wonders when it is piloted by a seasoned marketer.
